Kyoto Protocol of Credit Cards
12/22/2006

Innovation
Rabobank, the Dutch mutualist bank, now proposes the “climate credit card”, a credit
card warning its holder when his purchases are detrimental to the environment,
in the hope of altering the behavior of customers. Rabobank considers that buying
a full tank of gas, a four-wheel drive vehicle or a plane ticket contributes to
spreading greenhouse gases, and therefore to global warming. To keep its customers
alert to these issues, the bank makes a gift to the WWF when purchases of this type are made. The amount is proportionate to the contribution
of the customer to the production of carbon dioxide harmful to the planet. Inspired
by the pollution rights of the Kyoto protocol, this system is equivalent to financially
offsetting acts damaging to the environment. How would this apply to you ? « Back to previous pagePerspective
At the same time as Rabobank, Barclay’s Bank has also decided to venture in the protection of our planet and to transform its stock of 11 million cards so that they all become environmentally neutral in future. With this program, financed by the “Carbon Neutral Company” and developed by Axalto, Barclays and Rabobank point to a reality (one in substance, the other in form) that financial services will have to take into account during product creation and / or innovation processes.![]()
